Gardens

Your first impressions of Lakewold may be its European-style formal structure, but a closer look reveals the more intimate, personal garden Mrs. Wagner loved.

In 1958, Eulalie commissioned Thomas Church. Church was one of the most noted landscape architects of his time. Internationally acclaimed for this ability to seamlessly intertwine classical and modern design, he became know as "the last great traditional designer and the first great modern designer."

Once Church completed the framework, it was Eulalie who created the gardens. Together, they laid out a series of garden rooms; each responding to the natural settings and views. These rooms are where Eulalie's love for plants and eye for beauty came to life. She was keenly interested in rare and native plants, which she blended effortlessly in the garden's many naturalistic displays.
